Henry County Native Rides To Help Amputees; Still Needs $1,400

Los Angeles, Calif.-Former Henry Countian Dr. Janice Townsend feels "like a hamster in a wheel" these days and it's for a very good cause.

Dr. Townsend, who now lives in Los Angeles, is biking from San Francisco to San Diego to raise money for U.S. veteran amputees who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bike ride is assisting an organization, Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), which provides prosthetics to amputee soldiers and former soldiers.

The minimum goal of each of the bikers is $10,000, which must be raised by Oct 17. Dr. Townsend has so far raised some $8,600.  The ride is Oct. 17- 23.

"I am so inspired by these (prosthetic) recipients with whom I've had the privilege of training," she said. "I dare not complain how sore my legs feel after a training ride when I see these brave men and women struggle to get from a wheelchair to a handcycle."

She has ridden much of her ride with a veteran named Fred, who is a double above the knee amputee who is using a handcycle for his journey.

The link for donations to CAF is: www.mdc2009.kintera.org/couroau

Dr. Townsend's mother, Marilyn, still lives in Paris.
