Solid Waste Program Receives $23,100

PARIS (January 11, 2008) Henry County Mayor Brent Greer announced today that the Solid Waste Department has been awarded a $23,100 Recycling Equipment Grant. This grant is awarded by the Tennessee Dept of Environment and Conservation, Division of Solid Waste Management.

According to Ron Watkins, Henry County Solid Waste Manager, the grant will be used to purchase a new one-ton heavy duty chassis truck with new box container to haul recyclables from local business and industry to the recycling center. Watkins stated, “We are very pleased the TN Dept of Solid Waste has recognized our need for recycling equipment by awarding this grant to us! This grant will allow our program to continue to provide efficient pick up service with less down time due to maintenance repair work of older trucks in our fleet.”

In 2007 Henry County Recycling Center collected 1343 tons of cardboard, 130 tons of newspaper/magazines, and 152 tons of office paper. Watkins adds,” Henry County is diverting approx 45-50% of our waste stream from landfills, which exceeds the mandate by the state to divert at least 25%. The citizens of Henry County are to be commended for the continued support of our recycling program. I feel this grant will assist us to keep up with the continued growth of our recycling program in the future.”
